Virtual Museums & Galleries

As everyone is recommended to stay home and all cultural centers and museums are closed during these difficult times, how would you “go” to a museum and/or “attend” an exhibition? Many museums, art galleries, cultural institutions, etc. worldwide provide virtual tours to their art and cultural treasures, making thus culture go virtual as well.

National Museums and Archeological Site Areas, TURKEY

Cappadocia-Göreme Open Air Museum, Nevşehir

Cappadocia-Göreme Open Air Museum is a rock settlement that hosted the monastic life extensively between the4th and 13th century. In the area forming a valley, churches, chapels, dining halls, and seating spaces were carved in rock blocks. As of December 6, 1985, the Göreme Open-Air Museum has been included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List as a natural and cultural asset.

Chasm of Heaven and Hell, Mersin

Chasm of Heaven and Hell is located 2 km northwest of the Ancient Narlikuyu Port, 25 km from Silifke district center. These are natural (sinkhole) formations that have been formed by melting the lime layer of the groundwater for many years, and the water structure and the ceiling structure underneath have collapsed. Paradise pothole is one of the two natural wonders created naturally. At the entrance of the cave, there is a small church with a rectangular plan made of cut stones. The Hell pot is located 75 m north of the Heaven pothole. Since the outer edges of the sinkhole have a concave formation, it is not possible to go down to the said depression.

Dolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul

One of the most magnificent symbolic structures of the transformed identity of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century is the Dolmabahçe Palace, located in the Bosphorus, Istanbul. The interior and exterior decorations of the palace, not too far from the old traditions as a building plan, was prepared intensely based on western styles.

Efes Museum, Izmir

The most exciting works in Ephesus Museum are Artemis statue, pitching Eros, rabbit Eros, Eros head, Priapus statues, marble statues of Artemis, the Egyptian priest statue, Isis statue, and the various mythological god statues and Socrates’ head. The commercial section of the old Turkish towns and various handicrafts that disappear are exhibited in the central garden of the museum. In a separate part of the museum, there are gold, silver, copper coins, and jewelry starting from the Ancient Period, including the Ottoman period.

Fish Lake (Balıklı Göl), Şanlıurfa

The Fish Lake (Balıklıgöl), just in the south of Halil-ur Rahman Lake in Şanlıurfa, is located in front of Urfa Castle and is a lake with an area of ​​150 square meters. Balıklıgöl features a unique history, and there are various narrations about it.

Göbekli Tepe, Şanlıurfa

Göbeklitepe, which is known not to be used as a settlement and serves to worship, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018 with its amazing monumental architecture. In Turkey, the 2019 year has been announced as the “Göbeklitepe Year.”  Göbeklitepe, only a small part of which is recovered yet, with its 12 thousand-year history has changed the history of humanity. With Göbeklitepe, regarded as the oldest and most prominent worship (cult) center in the world, it has been proven the effect of religious belief in the transition to settled life.

Hagia Sophia Museum, Istanbul

Hagia Sophia Museum is a patriarchal cathedral built in the historical peninsula of Istanbul between the years 532-537 during the Byzantine Emperor Justinianus period. 1453, it was converted into a mosque by Fatih Sultan Mehmet. It has been serving as a museum since 1935. Hagia Sophia is a domed basilica type structure that combines the basilica plan and the central plan in terms of architecture and plays an essential role in the history of architecture with its dome transition and bearing system features.

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, Ankara

Anatolian Civilizations Museum is a history and archeology museum, located in Ulus-Altındağ district of Ankara. This museum, where the Anatolian archeology has been exhibited since the Paleolithic Age to the present, is one of the most famous museums in the world.

Topkapı Palace, Istanbul

Topkapı Palace is located in one of the oldest historic areas of Istanbul. Located on the historical Istanbul Peninsula between the Marmara Sea, the Bosphorus, and the Golden Horn, the palace is one of the iconic structures of Istanbul. Topkapı Palace, built on an area of 700.000 square meters on the Eastern Roman acropolis in Sarayburnu, has been the administrative, educational and artistic center of the Empire for about four hundred years, starting from Fatih Sultan Mehmet to the 31st Sultan Sultan Abdülmecid; it was also the home of the sultans.

American Museum of Natural History, New York-USA

Located on the upper west side of Manhattan in New York, the American Museum of Natural History is one of the largest natural history museums in the world. The museum collections contain more than 34 million plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and human cultural artifacts, as well as samples for frozen tissue and genomic and astrophysical data.

British Museum, London-ENGLAND

British Museum, located in the Bloomsbury area of London, England, has the title of being the largest museum in England as well as the presence of Roman Egyptian and Greek culture.

Galleria Degli Uffizi, Florence-ITALY

Galleria Degli Uffizi is one of the most important, most known, and one of the most visited museums in Italy. It has a collection of priceless artifacts, especially from the Italian Renaissance period.

Louvre Museum, Paris-FRANCE

The National Art Museum of China, Beijing-CHINA

The National Art Museum of China is the only national art museum on plastic arts in China. The museum is a national cultural landmark after the foundation of the People’s Republic of China. The main building, lined with yellow glazed tiles and surrounded by corridors and pavilions, has ancient Chinese attic and traditional architectural styles.

Indian National Museum-New Delhi-INDIA

The National Museum in New Delhi, also known as the National Museum of India, is one of the largest museums in India. Founded in 1949, it has various articles from prehistoric to modern art. The Government of India operates under the Ministry of Culture. The museum is located in Janpath, New Delhi. The museum contains about 200,000 artworks of 5,000 years of Indian and foreign origin.

The State Hermitage Museum, Saint Petersburg-RUSSIA

The State Hermitage Museum is an art and culture museum in Russia. It was founded in 1764, the world’s second-largest art museum, when the Great Empress Catherine received an impressive collection of paintings from Berlin’s merchant Johann Ernst Gotzkowsky. The museum has been open to the public since 1852.

Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam-The NETHERLANDS

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is hosts the most extensive collection of works of art by Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) in the world. Currently, 3523 images have been uploaded on their website, including pictures of Van Gogh and details from them.
